Mario is so popular because of the story and the unique characters it consists of and the unique power ups.  The unique selling point of this game is that the characters and the power ups and that it has been around for years. It has it's own TV show and it has it's own merchandise which sells really fast

 Sonic the Hedgehog is so popular because of its style of platform and its massive line of games , the TV series and merchandise.The unique selling pitch is that the characters are hedgehogs and the evil boss looks like a egg
